White Fragility by Robin DeAngelo
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I bought this book back in June, but could never really get in the right headspace to be able to take on this type of book. So I made myself promise that I would read it this year, and so I did. This book is hard to take, because no matter what you do you will never not be a racist. This doesn’t mean your typical definition of racism, where you openly hate people of color. It means we grew up in a crappy society where we have been raised to unfortunately have prejudices against people of color.

But we can strive everyday to be better and lessen that racism. I think the thing I needed to take away from this book is that mistakes do happen. You will say something or do something that offends someone and instead of being fragile about it we need figure out what we did wrong and work to fix it.

Being conscious of our mistakes and willing to examine them to try to make ourselves a better person is what we all need to do. Stop acting like we are being attacked because someone called us out on something. Work through it and learn from it. I now know I still have work to do and I am willing to do that work to be the type of person I want to be.
