Unorthodox by Deborah Feldman
⭐️⭐️⭐️

I decided to read this book because I wanted to watch the Netflix series, but I prefer to read the book first. I still haven’t watched the series so this review is only for the book. I felt like I learned a lot about Orthodox Jews, because I didn’t really know anything beforehand. I didn’t realize how big their community was or that there was different sects within the community.

But the book fell flat because a lot of Jewish words and holidays are mentioned without being explained. The ending of this book was super rushed too. The book thoroughly covers the beginnings of her life, but her “escape” is basically brushed over. The book I read had an afterword, but I can’t imagine how others felt that finished it without an afterword because the book just abruptly ends.

I know there is some controversy surrounding the book from her former community, which is to be expected. My issue is that she left out major details like having a younger sister who is never mentioned. Also, she said her mom couldn’t take her when she left the community, but she somehow was able to take her child when she left. I know there’s a sequel, but I doubt I’ll read it from reading the reviews.
