They Called Us Enemy by George Takei
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have read several books based on the American concentration camps, but this is the first book I have read by someone who actually experienced it. I loved that it was a graphic novel so I could see the facial expressions of the characters and see what the camps looked like. It also made for a very fast read. I read this book in one sitting and it made me feel so bad for how this country treats people who look different for no other reason than they look different. I know some Germans and some Italians were also imprisoned in concentration camps, but it was a small fraction compared to the Japanese that were imprisoned.

I also had no idea that when they were finally given reparations that it took almost 3 years before they received payment. I did like that the book didn’t just end with them being released from the camp and that it talked about what happened after and how long it took for them to get “justice” and how it took the government so long to strike down the law that made it possible in the first place. I would recommend this book. It helps you learn more about American history from someone who actually experienced it.
