The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Adunni’s story begins in a small village in Nigeria. At the age of 14, her father marries her off to an old man who already has two wives. When something unexpected happens in that house; she is then sold into domestic servitude. Her madam is cruel and beats her on a daily basis. Only the hope and idea of being able to get an education gets Adunni through each and every day.

This is such a beautifully written story. It took me about 50 pages to get into the flow of it because the writing is choppy with grammatical errors, only because Adunni’s English is not perfect. Once I finally got into the groove and got used to it, I was hooked.

I loved that Adunni was so driven to get an education. She knows just how important an education is and how much better it will make her life. I wish Americans would realize how lucky they are that they are guaranteed an education when so many people are not. I also loved all of the facts about Nigeria in the book. It helped me understand the country better. I only wish we would have learned what happened to Adunni later in life.

  1. Reading this now! I was worried the dialect would bother me, but I’m loving it so far.

  2. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get used to it, but I’m so glad I did. I read so many negative reviews about it, but I just think people didn’t realize the purpose. Their loss 🤷‍♀️ lol
