The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Historical fiction has always been my favorite genre and I enjoy reading about historical events that tend to be overlooked or don’t get a lot of books based in that time period. WWII has so many books, but it seems like every other event is underrepresented. The fact that this book is set during the Great Depression and takes place in the Dust Bowl region was unique and fascinating. I feel like this subject matter hasn’t been covered a lot and the only well known book is The Grapes of Wrath.

Hannah’s characters felt so alive to me and I connected with Elsa and could feel her disparity and her enjoyment throughout the book. I loved how people didn’t think Elsa could survive living on a farm, but she proved them wrong and even took her children to California to try to improve their lives. Every time someone doubted her she was able to show them what she was made of and how she was capable.

I didn’t know a lot about what people went through once they arrived in California and how much hate and hostility they faced. I also find it so frustrating to read about how people who wanted better wages and working conditions were treated…and are still treated today. Anyways, I would definitely recommend this book, but grab you some tissues and be prepared to cry at times.
