Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I had this book on TBR shelf for like two years and kept passing it over. The size of the book and the small font made me leery. So, I finally decided to conquer this book, and of course I’m now mad at myself for how long I waited to read this book. I really enjoyed this book and learned so much about the history of Koreans in Japan in the 20th century. I had no idea how much they were looked down upon, or how you could be second or third generation in Japan, but still not have citizenship in Japan.

I also didn’t realize how much shame one persons’ actions could bring upon their family. I had also never even heard of pachinko and had to google it when I was about a 1/4 of the way through the book, because I had no idea how the title related to the book. I would recommend this book, but prepare yourself for some tears to be shed because it is a very emotional book. I was very invested in this family’s lives and cried when they cried. I’m glad I finally read this book and got to experience this story.

  1. I read this shortly after reading George Takei’s story of being in the American concentration camps that were formed after Pearl Harbor. It really struck me the parallels between how easily a country can turn on you even when you are born there. 😢
