Miss Meteor by Tehlor Kay Mejia & Anna-Marie McLemore
I was fortunate enough to be gifted a box of @onceuponabookclubbox for this book. I thought the concept of the book was interesting, I just could not really get into the book. The magical realism in the book was just too much for me and it felt unnecessary and took me out of the book. I thought it was going to be a euphemism that was explained at the end of the book, but I was wrong. If it had been a euphemism, I think I could have gotten behind it, but I couldn’t get into the book since it wasn’t.
I did like how the book represented different people. The book had several Latinx characters, one who was pansexual. The book also had a transgender character who played a large portion in it. I felt their representation fit into the book and wasn’t used just to check some boxes like some books do these days.
Overall even though this book wasn’t for me I can appreciate the representation of different communities. I also think if you like magical realism then this book will appeal more to you than it did for me.
Thank you to Once Upon a Book Club for being generous enough to gift me this box. If you are interested in trying it out click the link in my bio for a 10% (WithStacie10) discount to try the box out. I love opening the gifts that go along with the book. It really brings the book to life. They also make great additions to my bookshelf for decorations.
