Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can’t imagine a family of 12 siblings and 6 of them being diagnosed with schizophrenia, but that is exactly what happens to the Galvins. Learning their history and how the disorder presented in each sibling differently was very interesting. I think a lot of people don’t know a lot about schizophrenia and I think this book did a great job at shedding light on it.

I also found it interesting how it was treated in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. It is crazy to think trained professionals at one time blamed the mother for people getting schizophrenia. It is saddening to think how even now there is such a negative reaction to mental health disorders. Also, people often don’t get the proper treatment, and even if they do how that treatment can lead to other health issues later on.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and enjoyed the linear storyline and how it wasn’t bogged down with medical jargon. I was able to understand it and learned a lot about schizophrenia in the process.

  1. I loved this book so much, I found it incredibly interesting but also heartbreaking how one family could have so many bad experiences.
