Book 106
The Last Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Margot’s mother mysteriously dies it sends Margot on a hunt to find out what happened to her mother and who her mother really was. Margot doesn’t realize how little she knows about her undocumented Korean mother until it is too late and Margot finds herself unwilling to let it go until she finally knows who her mother was and how her mother died.

Fascinating look into the life of a Korean immigrant who comes to America with secrets that even her own daughter doesn’t know. It was nice to learn more about Korean culture and identify. My only issue with the book is that Margot doesn’t really know any Korean. How is that even possible?! Wouldn’t she have learned as a child since her mother didn’t speak English? Did her mom just not talk to her kid when she was an infant. If anyone knows this answer please tell me!

  1. Thank you for reading and reviewing! Margot’s knowledge of Korean remains at a childhood level since she switched to mostly English when she went to school. She didn’t spend much time with her mother outside of work and the meals they shared. So as she got older, she was unable to explain her thoughts and feelings to her mother and vice versa, hardening the rift between them. If you’re interested, years ago, I wrote about a similar dynamic in my own family: https://apogeejournal.org/2015/10/12/nonfiction-what-i-want-to-say-by-nancy-jooyoun-kim/
